SJTU Regulations on Student Conduct during Examinations

Chapter One: General Provisions

Article 1 To standardize the university examination procedures, enhance the students’ academic conduct during examinations and maintain the examination order, these regulations are hereby formulated in accordance with the Measures for the Punishment of Regulatory Violations in State Education Examinations issued by the Ministry of Education as well as relevant laws and regulations, and with reference to the actual conditions of the University.

Article 2 These regulations shall apply to all students of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (hereinafter referred to as candidates). The School of Medicine and the School of Continuing Education may set out specific rules according to their particular situations based on the present regulations, which shall be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Education, Graduate School, Student Affairs Office and Legal Affairs Office for archive.

Article 3 These regulations shall apply to all kinds of examinations, including those organized by national and local governments as well as other authorized institutions.

Article 4 Candidates who violate the regulations shall be subject to punishments in accordance with the SJTU Discipline Policies.

Chapter Two: Examination Discipline Requirements

Article 5 Candidates shall bring their photo identification (student ID cards, ID cards and/or other required credentials) to attend the examination (National-level exams must be taken with valid identification as required on the pass). The identification needs to be placed at the designated position on the desk. Candidates without a valid identification shall be banned from the examination.

Article 6 Candidates should appear at the examination room at least 10 (ten) minutes before the commencement of the examination. Those who have not entered the examination room 15 (fifteen) minutes after the commencement of the examination, or those who leave the examination room without permission during the examination shall be deemed as giving up the examination.

Article 7 During examinations, candidates shall obey the instructions by the invigilators and take the designated seats. The examination papers shall not be issued to the candidates who do not follow the instructions.

Article 8 Candidates shall not use mobile phones or other electronic communication devices as timepiece, nor can they use electronic devices with storage, programming, or query functions. Those brought unconsciously by the candidates must be switched off and put at the place designated by the invigilators. Candidates are not permitted to bring their own scratch paper to the examination room. Only stationery and valid identification are allowed on the desk.

Article 9 Before the commencement of the examination, candidates shall check the desks, drawers and the surrounding of their seats. If any materials related to the examination content (except for the reference books or other materials approved by the course instructors for open book examinations) or handwritings are found, the candidate shall report to the invigilators in time.

Article 10 Candidates attending closed book examinations shall not place any textbooks or reference materials on the desk, into the drawer or nearby their seats.

Article 11 Candidates attending open book examinations shall not use computers or other electronic devices. Candidates may consult paper reference materials allowed by the course instructor, but shall not borrow materials from each other.

Article 12 Candidates shall remain silent in the examination room. In case of mistakes in paper issuance or illegible printing of the paper, the candidate shall raise his/her hand so that the invigilators can help to handle, however, no questions pertaining to the content of the examination shall be asked.

Article 13 Candidates shall write with a blue or black ink pen or a ballpoint pen. Unless otherwise required, answers written with red pen or pencil are invalid.

Article 14 After receiving the examination papers, candidates shall fill in the name, student ID number, and other information at the designated areas, and write down the answers within the prescribed time limit. Candidates may hand in their examination papers and leave the examination room no less than 30 minutes after the commencement of the examination.

Article 15 Under special circumstances (such as using the bathroom) and upon approval by the invigilators, candidates may leave the examination room during the examination, but must be escorted by one of the invigilators. The invigilators shall record the candidate’s information as well as his/her time of leaving and returning on the “SJTU Examination Registration Form”.

Article 16 Candidates, who finish writing before the conclusion of the examination, may hand in their examination papers to the invigilators and leave the examination room immediately.

Article 17 At the conclusion of an examination, all writing shall cease and all candidates shall remain seated until all the papers have been collected by the invigilators. If a candidate refuses to hand in his/her examination paper and ignores the invigilator’s request, the invigilator may declare not to collect the examination paper and the grade of the examination for the candidate will be recorded as zero. If the paper of a candidate is missing, the invigilator shall notify the candidate that his/her grade will be recorded as zero. Candidates may leave the examination room only when authorized by the invigilators.

Chapter Three: Identification of Examination Misconduct

Article 18 Candidates who do not comply with the discipline in the examination room, and do not obey the arrangement or meet the requirements made by the working staff, and who have conducted any of the following behaviors shall be deemed as misconduct:

(1) Carrying unauthorized items into the examination room or not putting them at designated places;

(2) Refusing to take the designated seat during the examination;

(3) Starting writing before the commencement signal of the examination or keeping writing after the conclusion signal;

(4) Peeping, whispering, or signaling to each other during the examination;

(5) Leaving the examination room during the examination without authorization;

(6) Taking examination papers, answer papers (answer cards, answer sheets, etc.), draft papers and other examination materials out of the examination room;

(7) Using pens or papers that are beyond the examination rules, not writing names or candidate numbers in designated areas, or leaving marks on the answer papers in other ways;

(8) Making noise or smoking in the examination rooms or areas where such behaviors are prohibited by the education examination organizations, or committing other acts which may affect the order in the examination rooms;

(9) Refusing/Hindering the examination staff from performing their administrative duties;

(10) Threatening, insulting, slandering, or framing the examination staff (invigilators, inspectors, or examination affairs administrators) or other candidates;

(11) Other infractions of the examination regulations while have not constituted cheating.

Chapter Four: Identification of Examination Cheating

Article 19 Candidates who commit any of the following acts during an examination in violation of the principles of fairness and justice shall be deemed to have cheated during the examination.

(1) Carrying into the examination room any examination related materials;

(2) Plagiarizing or assisting others in plagiarizing examination answers or materials related to the content of the examination;

(3) Grabbing or stealing others’ examination papers or answer sheets, or coercing others into facilitating his or her plagiarizing;

(4) Carrying or using electronic devices with storage, programming, or query functions;

(5) Carrying or using electronic devices capable of query functions and sending or receiving information;

(6) Allowing himself or herself to be impersonated by others at the examination;

(7) Impersonating another candidate at the examination;

(8) Intentionally damaging the examination papers, answer sheets or other examination materials;

(9) Writing another person's name or student number (or candidate number) on the answer sheets;

(10) Passing or receiving items, or exchanging examination papers, answer sheets and draft papers without the approval of the invigilators;

(11) Obtaining or attempting to obtain examination answers or scores by improper means.

Article 20 If one of the following behaviors is identified by the Office of Undergraduate Education, the Graduate School or examination working staffs during or after the examination, the candidate involved shall be deemed to have cheated during the examination:

(1) Obtaining the qualifications for taking the examination, or earning extra points, or getting examination scores by using forged credentials, certificates, archives or other materials;

(2) Having answers that are identified to be identical or similar to another candidate’s during the grading process;

(3) Violating the disciplines in the examination room, causing the invigilators to lose control over the examination and being involved in massive cheating;

(4) The examination working staffs are found to have assisted the candidate in examination cheating;

(5) Other behaviors that can be deemed as cheating.

Chapter Five: Punishment for Misconducts

Article 21 If a candidate is found to have examination misconduct, he/she shall stop writing and leave the examination room. The invigilators shall take back his/her examination paper immediately, and put a mark of “Disciplinary Violation” on the examination paper and the candidate list. The grade of the examination for the candidate shall be recorded as zero, and he/she shall be punished by the Student Affairs Office after the examination according to the seriousness of the violation.

Article 22 If a candidate is found to be cheating during an examination, he/she must stop writing, and his/her examination paper shall be taken back by the invigilator immediately. The invigilator shall preserve the evidence of cheating, and order the candidate to leave the examination room. The examination paper as well as the candidate list shall be marked “Cheating”, and the grade of the examination for the candidate shall be recorded as zero. If it is identified after the examination that the candidate has cheated, he/she shall be given a mark of zero for this examination, and the invigilators or the course instructor shall submit relevant materials to the Office of Undergraduate Education or the Graduate School.

Article 23 Should a candidate violates the regulations, the invigilator shall record it on the “Exam Room Incident Log”. After being confirmed and signed by the candidate, the form as well as relevant materials, if any, shall be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Education or Graduate School by the invigilator.

Article 24 If the violations listed in Article 18 or 19 have been found, and effective measures are required to stop or confirm the violations, the invigilators shall report to the Student Affairs Office or the Security Office accordingly.

Article 25 Materials related to the misconduct/cheating shall be submitted to the Student Affairs Office by the Office of Undergraduate Education or Graduate School within two working days after the examination (or after the violation is found). The Student Affairs Office shall decide the punishment in accordance with the “SJTU Discipline Policies”.

Chapter Six: Supplementary Provisions

Article 26 While taking examinations organized by the national or local governments or authorized institutions, candidates who violate the examination regulations shall also be punished according to these Regulations, apart from the regulations of the examination they take.

Article 27 These regulations came into force on September 1, 2019, and the “Examination Regulations of SJTU Students” was abolished simultaneously.

Article 28 These regulations are subject to interpretation by the Office of Undergraduate Education and the Graduate School.
