Jointly organized by the Graduate School and the School of Foreign Languages, the 1st SJTU Simulated International Academic Conference Communication Contest for PhD Students provides research students with the opportunity to further enhance their academic presentation and communication skills. The details of the contest are listed as follows:

About the contest

The contest takes the form of prepared presentations and impromptu questions and answers.

• The prepared presentation: Each contestant uses easy-to-understand English to introduce a cutting-edge research in their field to an audience without relevant professional backgrounds. Contestants can introduce their completed or partially completed research, or they can introduce research plans that are still at the design stage.

• The Q & A: After each presentation, the judges ask questions about the content of the presentation, and the contestant answers the questions.

Eligibility

All active doctoral students of SJTU are eligible to participate in the contest.

Rules for the contest

• English is used for the conference.

• The duration of each contestant’s competition is no more than 10 minutes, of which the presentation is limited to 7 minutes, and the Q & A is less than 3 minutes.

• PPT slides can be used to assist the presentation. It is recommended that each contestant uses no more than 15 pages.

• The presentations are to be spoken word (no poems, raps or songs).

• A presentation is considered to have commenced when the contestant starts the presentation through movement or speech.

• Contestants are expected to wear professional attire.

• The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.

Conference abstract

Each contestant needs to submit a conference abstract, summarizing the main content of the speech. The abstract should be written in English and approximately 300 words in length.
