On the morning of July 3, 2023, the 8th " Zhi-Hong " International Summer School of Advanced Materials, organized by the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, opened in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The theme of this summer school is "future materials". Lizhen Sun, Chair of the Party Committee of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Jinhua Cheng, Deputy Dean of the Graduate School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Chun-chao Chen, the lecturer representative of the summer school, and relevant teachers of the working group attended the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was presided over by Associate Professor Chen Shen from the School of Materials Science and Engineering, and over 30 students from five countries including Kazakhstan, Serbia, Brazil, Nepal, and China got together.
Chair Lizhen Sun addressed the opening ceremony. She first expressed warm welcome to all the students and guests attending the Summer School. She then introduced the history and basic information of "Zhi-Hong" Summer School. Since the establishment of Summer School in 2016, well-known scholars and students from over 20 countries have gathered together to exchange ideas in a variety of academic and cultural activities. This year, well-known scholars from Northwestern University, SUNY-Stony Brook, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Cambridge University, National University of Singapore, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University have been invited to give academic lectures. At the same time, wonderful interactive activities will be organized as a platform for culture exchange, making friends, and talent show. Next, Prof. Jinhua Cheng, delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the Graduate School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He pointed out that "Zhi-Hong" International Summer School aimed to create a high-quality platform for international academic and cultural exchange for students. At present, international exchanges have been regarded as an important mission for all the universities. Prof. Chun-chao Chen, representative of the lecturers, encouraged the students to learn the basic principles of future materials, and stimulated their enthusiasm for scientific research and material innovation. In addition, he also hoped that more than 30 students from different backgrounds can learn about cultural customs around the world through interactive exchanges and make new friends.
Jialu Xu, a student from the Summer School, shared her journey and outlook, and introduced the learning, living, research environment, and cultural landscape of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. She wished to seize this rare opportunity to learn and face future challenges.
Later, Prof. Chen Shen, the host of the opening ceremony, introduced Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the School of Materials Science and Engineering, and "Zhi-Hong" International Summer School of Advanced Materials, including the objectives, themes, teachers, activity arrangements, etc.

From the activities they learned about the characteristics of the Shanghai city, the general situation of the SJTU, the history of the SMSE, and the contents of the 8th "Zhi-Hong" International Summer School for Advanced Materials.
The "Zhi-Hong" International Summer School (ISS) for Advanced Materials has been held annually since 2016. It is also the first time to resume offline after the COVID-19 epidemic. The ISS constantly innovates its teaching mode, and provides students with opportunities to understand and learn the international academic frontiers in the field of advanced materials around the advantageous research directions and research hotspots in the field of materials. It not only extends the students' knowledge and academic vision, but provides a broader platform for Chinese and oversea students to communicate and learn from each other.
