SJTU Regulations on Scholarship Review for New International Graduate Students

Chapter One General Provisions

Article 1 To attract more high-quality international students to apply for the graduate programs of the University, and to regulate the management of the scholarship review for international graduate students, these regulations are hereby formulated concerning the actual situation of the University.


Article 2 To ensure quality and authority, the review of scholarship for international graduate students follows the general principles of openness, fairness, and justice.


Article 3 Review of scholarship for international graduate students contains student individual application, School recommendation, and comprehensive evaluation by the University.

Article 4 The Graduate School is responsible for the management and organization of the review of scholarships for international graduate students of the University.


Chapter Two Types of Scholarship and Objects of the Review

Article 5 Scholarship for International graduate students includes Chinese Government Scholarships (University Independent Recruitment Programs), Shanghai Government Scholarships, and University Scholarships and other scholarships for international graduate students reviewed by the University.


Article 6 Scholarship for New International Graduate Students is exclusively for international postgraduates or doctoral graduates who apply for the graduate programs of the University and successfully obtain admission.


Article 7 Scholarships for postgraduates are usually available for 2-3 years and 4 years for doctoral graduates. Information including the content and standard of the scholarship can be learned in the SJTU General Information About International Graduate Recruitment of that year.


Chapter Three Requirements for Scholarship


Article 8 Requirements

(1) Applicants have not received any other scholarship.

(2) Applicants have already been admitted as new international graduate students by the University.

(3) Students who apply for Chinese Government Scholarships (University Programs) should also meet the requirements below:

1. Academic background and age:

International postgraduate students in China should have a bachelor's degree and be younger than 35 years old.

International postgraduate students in China should have a bachelor's degree and be younger than 35 years old.

2. The program applied is not among the majors of the applicant's native language, English, French, or any other third language literature majors.

3. Applicants must hand in the information for scholarship review in time before the expiration date.


Chapter Four Review Procedures

Article 9 School (Department) Recommendation

(1) School (Department) Evaluation

Each School (Department) should organize a New International Graduate Recruitment Guidance Group to carry out the Recommendation. The main responsibilities of the Committee are as follows: lead, organize, coordinate and manage the Review of Scholarship; establish a feasible operation scheme for the Review of Scholarship; complete the Review and Recommendation of international graduate scholarships in accordance with the operation scheme. The chairperson of the Group and Scholarship Review should sign detailed comments on the Recommendation, and the Recommendations shall be submitted to the International Office of the Graduate School in time according to the requirements of the University.


(2) Recommendation Criteria

The Recommendation of Scholarship in School (Department) shall be based on a thorough evaluation of the performance of the international students in terms of professional ability, academic potential, language skill, comprehensive ability, and other factors. Students who meet the following requirements should be considered as priority recommendations.

1. Under the same condition, students with phenomenal research ability, potential, and academic papers.

2. Under the same condition, students with better professional ability, more systematic knowledge structure, and better course scores.

3. Under the same condition, students who are good at communicating and have better grades in TOFEL, IELTS, or GRE.

4. Under the same condition, students graduated from universities or subjects with higher world rankings.

(3) Review Result Submission

When the Recommendation of Scholarship is completed by the School (Department), the results shall be signed by the Committee chairperson and the Dean of the School (Department) concerned, and then submitted to the Graduate School as required.


Article 10 University Review


The International Office of Graduate School is responsible for organizing the comprehensive Review of Scholarships for all international students in the University. A review committee shall be organized by inviting experts. By referring to the evaluation results of the School (Department), and taking into account the overall scholarship granting within the University, the Committee should make a final decision on the list of international graduate students who are granted the scholarship.


Article 11 Results Announcement

The results of the Scholarship Review shall be published in batches on the International Student Center website (http://isc.sjtu.edu.cn) for 7 working days in July every year.


Article 12 Results Check

After the result announcement, students who applied for a scholarship can log in to the enrollment website (http://apply.sjtu.edu.cn/) and check the final result.


Chapter Five Miscellaneous


Article 13 The International Office of Graduate School is responsible for the annual review of the study and academic performance of international graduate students in the University. The review is held from April to May each year to decide whether the scholarship of the student can maintain or resumed. For students who fail in the review, their scholarships will be suspended or canceled.


Article 14 These regulations are subject to interpretation by the Graduate School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and come into force as they are announced. In case other former regulations are inconsistent with the present regulations, the present regulations shall prevail.
