SJTU Regulations on Academic Advising for International Graduate Students

Chapter One: General Provisions

Article 1 To strengthen the standard management of academic advising for international graduate students and promote the sound development of international postgraduate education in our University, these management measures are formulated in accordance with the laws and regulations such as the Higher Education Law of the People's Republic of China, the Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Academic Degrees and Administrative Measures for Recruiting and Training International Students (Decree No. 42 of the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China).


Article 2 The international graduate students referred to in these regulations refer to foreign citizens who do not have Chinese nationality according to the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China and apply to come to SJTU for graduate studies.


Article 3 The training of international graduate students follows the basic principle of consistency with domestic graduate students. The training objectives and graduation requirements are the same as those of Chinese students of the same major while focusing on cultivating their understanding of Chinese culture, system and values, and cultivating international talents who know China, are friendly to China and love China. International graduate students should be familiar with the Chinese national conditions and culture including the basic knowledge of Chinese history, geography, society and economy, understand the Chinese political system and foreign policy, understand the mainstream values and public morality of Chinese society as a way to develop their awareness of rule of law and morality, and be equipped with the awareness, knowledge, attitude and skills to embrace, recognize and adapt to cultural diversity. They should be able to play a role in mutual respect, understanding and solidarity among different ethnic groups, societies and nations.


Article 4 The management of daily affairs of international graduate students, including obligations to be fulfilled, organization and participation in club activities, ideological education, etc., is carried out in accordance with the SJTU Regulations of International Students.


Article 5 International graduate students pursuing doctoral and master's degrees must take "Introduction to Chinese Culture", and those taught in foreign languages must take "Chinese Language". International graduate students taught in foreign languages should graduate with at least HSK (Level III) proficiency in Chinese.


Article 6 The supervisor is the first person responsible for the training of international graduate students, and the University and schools offer corresponding support and management services.


Article 7 The University and the school should offer international graduate students with the same study facilities, environment and conditions as domestic graduate students of the same major and year, and encourage them to study and research together with domestic graduate students and participate in high-level international conferences and academic exchanges.


Article 8 The student status, training and management of international graduate students are in accordance with the SJTU Regulations on Graduate Education and Management.


Article 9 The training requirements and management of international master students are in accordance with the SJTU Regulations on the Training of Master Degree Students.


Article 10 The training requirements and management of international doctoral students are in accordance with the SJTU Regulations on the Training of Doctoral Degree Students.


Article 11 International master students shall apply for the degree in accordance with the SJTU Regulations on Master’s Degree Application.


Article 12 International doctoral students shall apply for the degree in accordance with the SJTU Regulations on Doctoral Degree Application.


Article 13 These regulations are subject to interpretation by the Graduate School and come into force as of the date of promulgation.
