Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW, ranking 43rd in the QS World University Rankings) have developed a long-standing cooperative relationship in graduate education. The year 2018 saw the launch of a joint PhD program (inter-university cooperation) between SJTU and UNSW, which aims to further expand academic cooperation between the two universities and promote international academic talent cultivation and exchange. Under the joint Ph.D Program agreement between the two universities, candidates have registered as full-time PhD students at both SJTU and UNSW and will be required to study at UNSW in Sydney for at least one year during their PhD studies. Participants should complete all the requirements for their PhD training at SJTU and UNSW respectively, as well as complete a PhD dissertation under the supervision of their supervisors from both universities and submit the thesis for review in accordance with the procedures of each university. Wu Peicheng and Wu Shangxuan, our PhD students in the first cohort selected for the SJTU-UNSW joint PhD program (no more than 10 students are selected from SJTU each year), completed all the requirements in June 2022 and successfully passed the international review and defense process at SJTU and the international review process at UNSW.
Wu Peicheng was a master student of Economic Law in the class of 2016 at KoGuan School of Law and a PhD student of Economic Law in the class of 2018 at KoGuan School of Law, with his research interests in competition law and intellectual property law. He was admitted as one of the first students into the SJTU-UNSW joint PhD program in 2018 and completed his PhD thesis in English under the supervision of Prof. Wang Xianlin of KoGuan School of Law, SJTU as well as Prof. Deborah Healey, Associate Prof. Weng Xiaochuan and Associate Prof. Alexandra George of Faculty of Law, UNSW. Funded by the China Scholarship Council, he studied at UNSW from September 2019 to September 2020. In addition to completing the doctoral curriculum and thesis requirements of SJTU, he also completed all the compulsory doctoral courses as required by UNSW and attended UNSW’s Annual Progress Review for three consecutive years and UNSW’s Confirmation of Candidature defense. In April 2022, his PhD thesis was submitted to both universities for review, and recently successfully passed the international PhD defense at SJTU and the international review at UNSW.

Wu Shangxuan become a PhD student of Legal Theory in the class of 2017 at KoGuan School of Law, with his research interests in corporate governance and corporate compliance. He was admitted as one of the first students into the SJTU-UNSW joint PhD program in 2018 and completed his PhD thesis in English under the supervision of Prof. Yang Li of KoGuan School of Law, SJTU as well as Associate Prof. Weng Xiaochuan and Associate Prof. Marina Nehme of Faculty of Law, UNSW. He studied at UNSW from May 2019 to May 2020. In addition to completing the doctoral curriculum and thesis requirements of SJTU, he also completed all the compulsory doctoral courses as required by UNSW and attended UNSW’s Annual Progress Review for three consecutive years and UNSW’s Confirmation of Candidature defense. Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a comprehensive, research-oriented and international top-tier university, has always aimed to nurture first-class talents. As a key part in SJTU’ s internationalization, the SJTU-UNSW joint PhD program provides PhD students with the experience of studying at home and abroad in top universities, further promoting the professionalism and internationalism of the participants. As the first batch of participants, Wu Peicheng and Wu Shangxuan successfully completed the program, during which they have undergone rigorous academic training in Chinese and foreign law, conducted academic research on civil law, common law and Chinese legal practice, and developed strong academic writing and expression skills in English. Furthermore, they have also demonstrated their excellent ability as SJTUers and contributed to the internationalization and world reputation of SJTU. As pioneers, they two have actively explored the practical implementation of the program throughout their doctoral studies, and made suggestions for the improvement of the relevant cooperation system between SJTU and UNSW, which has laid a good foundation for other participants’ successful completion of this program in the future.
